The Chamber Singers, a select choir of 21 voices from Lone Star College-Montgomery, will have a free concert, “Songs from Around the World,” on Wednesday, March 23, at 7:30 p.m. before the group travels to central Texas for its annual choir tour.

The program features music in many languages that is filled with energy and majesty, beauty and intimacy including the Rautavaara “Suite de Lorca.” The audience will hear the premiere of a newly-commissioned work, “Three Madrigals, “ by emerging young composer Zachary Wadsworth.

“We have commissioned Mr. Wadsworth to write a new choral work for the Chamber Singers,” said Dominick DiOrio, assistant professor of music and director of choral activities. “‘Three Madrigals’ is a beautiful and poignant setting of poems by Herbert Trench.”

Wadsworth is currently studying for his doctor of musical arts at Cornell and holds degrees from the Yale School of Music and the Eastman School of Music. He will be in residence at Lone Star College-Montgomery to give presentations to the music students, give feedback during rehearsal sessions of his new piece, and attend the performance.

Currently, DiOrio is a doctoral candidate in choral conducting at Yale University (Master of Musical Arts 2009). He received his master’s degree in choral conducting from Yale University in 2008, studying with noted professors Marguerite L. Brooks and Simon Carrington. DiOrio received his bachelor’s degree in composition from the Ithaca College School of Music in 2006, graduating summa cum laude.

This spring marks the sixth annual tour for the LSC-Montgomery Chamber Singers. The tour includes performances at Conroe and Montgomery High Schools, the University of Texas at Austin, Texas State University, and the Texas State Capitol.
