Trustees Seek Candidates to Fill Unexpired Term

Lone Star College System trustees accepted the resignation of board member Maria Flotte O’Neill Thursday night, and took steps to fill the position by appointment. O’Neill recently moved to a home outside the college district. State law says a college trustee must reside within district boundaries. In accepting the resignation, chairman Randy Bates appointed a board committee of three members—Richard Campbell, David Holsey and Priscilla Kelly—to bring forward a recommendation to replace O’Neill for the duration of her unexpired term. “Maria was a capable trustee,” Bates said. “She will be greatly missed.”  The resignation put the number of acting board members at eight. Bates explained that law requires an odd number of members. “We are seeking a candidate to serve on the board until the next board election in May. The appointee would then run for election to fill the remainder of Maria’s unexpired term, until May 2010.” To be qualified, a person must be 18 years of age or older, have lived within the state for at least 12 months and within the college district for at least six months. Other qualifications also apply. Bates said resumes from interested and qualified individuals would be received until 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12.
