AtD Academic Advisors

Erin De Souza, part-time AtD academic advisor, reports that 180 FTIC students comprise the AtD academic advisor cohort this fall at LSC-North Harris. All of the students are also enrolled in EDUC 1300, the student success course.  As members of the AtD cohort, the students must fulfill several requirements and they will be tracked for specific AtD data purposes.

These students must meet with the AtD academic advisor twice during the semester.

o   First meeting focus is to make sure students are in correct classes and to discuss career and academic goals.

o   At the second meeting, the student and advisor develop an academic plan tailored to the individual educational needs of each student.

·         Most of the EDUC 1300 Learning Frameworks instructors have made the advisor meetings and the formation of an academic plan a graded requirement.

Data Points

o   The data reveal that In Fall 2008, 95% of the MATH 0308 advising cohort completed the term compared to 96% of FTIC MATH 0308 students who were not in the advising cohort.

o   Retention to Spring 2009 was 74% for the MATH 0308 advising cohort and 84% for FTIC MATH 0308 students who were not in the advising cohort.

o   In Spring 2009, the FTIC ENGL 0305 and ENGL 0307 advising cohort’s completion rate was 97% compared to 93% for the FTIC ENGL 0305 and ENGL 0307 students not in the cohort.
