Lone Star College was recently ranked sixth in the nation among community colleges enrollment of international students for the 2006-2007 academic year. The ranking was published by the Institute of International Education’s Open Doors 2007 Report on International Educational Exchange. LSC enrolled 1,676 international students during the 06-07 academic year.
According to the Open Doors International Student Census, the number of international students studying in the U.S. rebounded to a total of 582,984 students in 06-07, the first substantial increase in enrollment since 01-02.
“Lone Star College System is located in a world class city, Houston,” said Nithyanantha Sevanthinathan, LSCS director of international programs and services.
“Our diversity in academic offerings, committed faculty and staff, open enrollment, affordable tuition, smaller classroom and excellent facilities compared to many universities is very appealing,” he said.
The report also stated that California, New York, Texas, Massachusetts and Florida were the leading host state for international students. Together the five leading states hosted 248,507 or 43 percent of all international students.
Business management and engineering were the top fields of study for international students according to the report.
“Also many families outside the U.S. are realizing that we have a gem that their sons and daughters can get an excellent education before pedaling up to four years institution,” said Sevanthinathan.
“The future is very optimistic because community colleges are a very unique American enterprise,” he said.
Lone Star College System consists of five colleges, including CyFair, Kingwood, Montgomery, North Harris, and Tomball, six centers and Lone Star College-University Center. It is the largest institute of higher education in the Houston area, and third largest community college district in Texas. To learn more, visit LoneStar.edu.
