Two deans and 18 Lone Star College System faculty have been awarded sabbatical leave for the 2008-2009 academic year. In making the announcement Dr. Richard Carpenter, chancellor, said, “The proposals (for the sabbaticals) cover a breadth of disciplines and functional areas and highlight the creativity and passion for learning that is so much a part of our culture at Lone Star College System.”
Lone Star College-CyFair recipients include Sandra Grebe, biology professor, to redesign class material and enhance online classes by adding audio, video, and active response learning components to courses and the use of PRS; and Heather Mitchell, English professor, to create a multi-faceted Learning Community program for students.
Lone Star College-Kingwood recipients include Vida Davoudi, political science professor, to develop two online government courses; Margaretha L. Johnson, computer technology professor, to complete 9 hours of graduate work; Mari Omori, art professor, to travel to Japan and Mexico to contact indigenous artists, and culminating in a group exhibition at Lone Star College.
Lone Star College-Montgomery recipients include Becky Gustamante, instructional dean, to increase the Hispanic enrollment at LSC-Montgomery; Earl Holt, professor of music; to expand the content and organization of sophomore level music course by expanding and updating knowledge of 20th – 21st century classical music; Rajiv Malkan, computer information technology professor, to complete doctoral dissertation; and David Wickham, English professor, to research approaches on reading and teaching Shakespeare at the college level.
Lone Star College-North Harris recipients include Charlene Bigham, speech and drama professor, to update knowledge of obtaining agents, formats for pictures, and resumes, and auditioning for theatre and film by immersing in the professional acting community; James Carroll, professor and counselor, to obtain information on pre-medical and health student support programs at area colleges and on requirements of professional schools; Mahmoud Davoudi, economic professor, to enrich his knowledge about trade between the U.S. and China; Angela Gant, professor of English and developmental studies, to research best practices in teaching reading skills transfer; Pamela L. Heard, professor of dance, to visit five universities, take classes and attend NY performances; Theresa McGinley, history professor, to complete academic research on select historical topics from World War I and World War II; and Andre Perez, dean of institutional advancement, to complete doctoral dissertation.
Lone Star College-Tomball recipients include Cheryl Bates, professor of music, to complete several scholarly activities: writing articles from dissertation for publication, doing research study, and finding grants to purchase musical instruments for the college; Joyce D. Boyd, professor of veterinary technology, to obtain master’s degree in biology; Greg Oaks, English professor, to finish a collection of short stories; and Mary P. Trenkle, foreign languages professor, to produce dialogues and questions to accompany each chapter in the Spanish textbook, Puntos de partida, used in Spanish courses.
