Fifth Annual International Education Conference Set for April 18 at Lone Star College-Tomball

The Fifth Annual International Education Conference (IEC) is set for Friday, April 18, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Lone Star College-Tomball.

The annual IEC, hosted by the Lone Star College System and the Gulf Coast International Education Consortium, is open to all faculty, administrators, community leaders, and college and high school students in the Texas Gulf Coast region and is an opportunity to discuss global issues and highlight best practices in international education.

The theme of this year’s conference is Global Issues: Economy, Energy, Environment. The event will include a variety of presentations on international topics and exhibitors, as well as a poster contest for community college students from across the state.

Emmy award winning Channel 13 news anchor Art Rascon will be the conference’s opening speaker and Associate Director of the Center for International Energy and Environmental Policy (CIEEP) at the University of Texas at Austin Dr. Michael E. Webber will give the keynote address on Brazil’s Ethanol fuel program.

Breakout sessions include Creating Second Chance Possibilities Through a U.S. International Education Policy by Rice University International Students and Scholars Director Dr. Adria L. Baker; a presentation on U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) regulations as they pertain to international students who hold F-1 student visa status by attorney Judith G. Cooper; and a presentation by the Lone Star College System students who participated in the 2008 National Model UN Student Delegation competition held at the United Nations in New York City.

Additional session topics include: Was the Earth Warmer Before?; China: What Next?; Cultural Attitudes Towards Environmental Issues; Education and Race in the Early Years of the American Empire; Musical, Historical, and Cultural aspects of the Trinidadian Steel Pan; Internationalizing Southern History; and Increasing Underrepresented Student Participation in Study Abroad Programs.
