Lone Star College System Small Business Development Center, along with it’s seminar partners, MC-SHRM and The WorkSource, recently hosted 65 people from throughout the community for the first of three sessions titled “Workforce Compliance and Law Update: what you don’t know CAN hurt you.”

The first session held April 16, “Harassment, Discrimination and Retaliation Laws,” was presented by Joe Bontke, outreach manager for the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.  Bontke discussed hiring and recruiting practices geared toward business success and avoidance of EEOC litigation.

“Joe is an expert in his field and presented complex training material that was both understandable and entertaining,” said Sal Mira, SBDC director.

Session two, “Understanding Wage and Hour Laws,” will be held April 30 followed by the third session “HR Essentials-get it right the first time,” on May 7.

“The next two lunch-hour sessions promise to be equally exciting and a good use of the business community’s time,” said Mira.

“Both programs will be delivered by nationally, recognized authorities in the interpretation and application of other very important aspects of employment law in a relaxed and interactive setting. We are very pleased that LSCS, the SBDC and MC-SHRM are able to assist local businesses better understand these issues and thus help to avoid the cost and distraction of unnecessary legal proceedings,” said Mira.

All sessions are hosted at the Lone Star College System training center at 5000 Research Forest Drive in The Woodlands.  The cost per session is $40 and includes a light lunch.  Participants attending all three sessions may register for $99 and will receive .9 C.E.U.S and HRCI Credits pending HCRI approval.
