Phi Theta Kappa Academic Team Members Recognized

Eight Lone Star College students were recognized for their outstanding academic achievement at a reception to honor 2008 Guistwhite Scholars, All-Texas and All-USA Academic Teams was hosted April 23, at the LSC training center.

The All-USA and All-Texas Academic Team programs annually recognize outstanding two-year college students nationwide. Members of the All-USA Academic Team and their colleges receive extensive national recognition through coverage in USA TODAY. Selection is based on nominations submitted by community college presidents.

Phi Theta Kappa, USA TODAY and the American Association of Community Colleges sponsor the All-USA Academic Team program annually. Nominees are automatically nominated to the All-Texas Academic Team recognition program which is co-sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa, two-year college presidents, and the Texas Association of Community Colleges.

Up to 20 Guistwhite Scholars are chosen annually by applications, based on academic achievement, participation in Phi Theta Kappa programs, and service to their colleges and communities. The Guistwhite Scholar Program is named in honor of Dr. Jack Guistwhite, who established the first designated transfer scholarship for Phi Theta Kappa members, and his wife, Margaret Guistwhite.

LSCS Chancellor, Dr. Richard Carpenter provided a welcome address at the reception which was attended by vice chancellors and other college administrators. The following students were recognized for their achievement.

LSCS and Phi Theta Kappa co-hosted the reception. The purpose of Phi Theta Kappa is to recognize and encourage scholarships among two-year college students. To achieve this purpose, Phi Theta Kappa provides opportunities for development of leadership and service, for an intellectual climate for exchange of ideas and ideals, for lively fellowship for scholars, and for stimulation of interest in continuing academic excellence.
