Lone Star College System joins the Texas and American Nurses Associations in recognizing Nurse’s Week May 6-12.This year, the American Nurses Association selected "Nurses: Making a Difference Every Day," as the theme for 2008.
Lone Star College is a primary provider of nurses and health care workers in the Houston area.
“LSCS enrolls approximately 750 student nurses across the five colleges, offering a variety of different programs and schedules to accommodate the needs of today’s students,” said Peggy Aalund, LSC-Kingwood director of nursing program.
“LSCS is committed to meeting student needs and the needs of area health care facilities to provide the most competent, compassionate nurses possible. Approximately two-thirds of all nurses get their education in a community college setting. In a time of a severe nursing shortage, LSCS is working with our community and area facilities to meet these needs,” said Aalund.
In a recent resolution supporting the LSCS May 10 bond referendum signed by ten local hospital executives, the urgency to provide nurses and healthcare workers was reinforced.
“Nationwide, we are facing a serious shortage of nurses and healthcare workers at a time when the baby boom population is reaching Medicare age and demand for healthcare services is rising,” said the resolution.
Nursing pinning ceremonies will be held throughout the week at Lone Star Colleges. A pinning ceremony is a symbolic welcoming of newly-graduated nurses into the nursing profession.
Lone Star College System consists of five colleges, including CyFair, Kingwood, Montgomery, North Harris, and Tomball, six centers and Lone Star College-University Center. With more than 49,200 students in credit classes last fall, LSCS is the third largest community college system in Texas. To learn more, visit LoneStar.edu.
