Purpose of the Placement Test

The State of Texas requires all students who attend a public institution of higher education to be assessed in the areas of reading, writing and mathematics. The Texas Success Initiative (TSI) is a state legislated program designed to improve student success in college. The purpose of placement testing is to determine your current level of skills and knowledge in reading, writing and math. This information determines the most appropriate courses for your enrollment.

Who Has to Take the Placement Test?

All students, unless considered TSI Complete, must take a complete assessment (COMPASS, ACCUPLACER, or THEA) prior to enrolling at LSCS. Enrollment in most college-level courses requires scores high enough to place into the college-level course or students will need to complete all appropriate developmental coursework with a “C” or better. For more information about standards for TSI complete and placement test scores, please review the LSCS Catalog.

Determining Course Placement

  • This is not a pass/fail test.
  • A placement test helps determine appropriate academic level.
  • Proper course placement during the first year is critical to fostering student success in college. Placement scores help ensure students enroll in courses that best match their academic skills and prior learning experience.
  • Enrollment in most college-level courses requires meeting a minimum score or students will need to complete all appropriate developmental coursework with a “C” or better.
