Communications, Outreach and Engagement FAQs

What do I do if a reporter contacts me?

If a reporter contacts you directly, please let the office of Communications, Outreach and Engagement know. Reporters are on a tight deadline, so responses to media inquiries should be addressed immediately.

If a reporter is seeking comments regarding your perspective as an expert in a particular field, you are free to comment to the extent to which you are comfortable. All other reporter requests for information should be referred to Communications, Outreach and Engagement.

What campus/community marketing options are available to promote an event, program or speaker?

Our Work Request form includes a variety of internal and campus marketing options. To reach all employees, requests for an e-mail blast, inclusion in the e-newsletter and/or inclusion on the Week-at-a-Glance e-mail (for campus-wide events) are available. For all audiences, promotion is also available through posters/fliers/postcards, on the TV monitors across campus, on the college website, through social media such as the college Facebook page and in community publications.

How do I get campus and/or community coverage of my event, program or speaker?

A Work Request form must be completed, approved and submitted via e-mail by your dean/director to Laura.C.Noah@lonestar.edu. This work request includes internal and external marketing options as well as offers a variety of campus and web promotion options. Please submit request with a lead time of at least three weeks for proper media promotion. (Keep in mind, deadlines vary among publications from a couple weeks to a couple months prior to event date.) Contact Kelly Norton at 281.290.3969 or Kelly.A.Norton@LoneStar.edu to discuss such marketing options as well as community publication options and deadlines.

What if I cannot provide the work request information with a three-week lead time?

Communications, Outreach and Engagement staff will help promote an event with marketing options available as effectively as possible. However, newsworthy events can also be submitted to community publications in the form of a follow-up release and/or action photo with a cutline. Feel free to contact Kelly Norton at 281.290.3969 or Kelly.A.Norton@LoneStar.edu to discuss such options.

What if I have a special interest story idea that I believe is newsworthy?

Stories such as faculty, staff or student awards, recognitions and accomplishments or involvement in unique programs or community efforts as well as exceptional personal features are certainly of interest to Communications, Outreach and Engagement. Feel free to contact Kelly Norton at 281.290.3969 or Kelly.A.Norton@LoneStar.edu to discuss the idea, its newsworthiness and what internal/external media venues are appropriate. In addition, a Work Request form must be completed, approved and submitted via e-mail by your dean/director to Laura.C.Noah@lonestar.edu.
