PURPOSE OF PROGRAM

To provide an opportunity for qualified students who have identified Clinical Laboratory Sciences as a career choice to receive early acceptance into the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston (UTMB) Department of Clinical Laboratory Sciences (CLS) Program towards completion of their Bachelor's of Science degree.

ADMISSIONS POLICY

1.Student applies and is admitted to Lone Star College System (Lone Star College System).

2.Student satisfies the following requirements for acceptance into the UTMB CLS Program:

a.Student meets entry criteria established by Lone Star College System.
b.Acceptable pre-entry interview by the faculty of the UTMB CLS Program at Lone Star College System or The University of Texas Medical Branch, during the first semester of the student's sophomore year. This interview is to determine the student's motivation for the CLS health profession, to assess personal qualities deemed valuable to the CLS health profession, to familiarize the student with the UTMB CLS Program, and to allow the student to assess whether such a Program is suited to them.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

1.The student enters the Biotechnology Program curriculum designed by Lone Star College System that shall include the minimal course requirements as outlined below by the UTMB CLS Program. The student is encouraged to take as many courses in the sciences as possible but should realize that a strong liberal arts background is important for the development of well-rounded and successful health professions students and practitioners.

2.Participants in the dual entrance or early acceptance program will be assigned an advisor at UTMB to provide the student with a personal contact during the initial course of study at Lone Star College System. The advisor will also aid the student in the timely completion of processes, such as completing UTMB admissions procedures.

3.Following successful completion of the required Biotechnology curriculum and UTMB CLS prerequisites at Lone Star College System, the student will enroll in the UTMB CLS Program, contingent upon the following:

a.A grade of "C" or better in all required Biotechnology and prerequisite courses.

b.A cumulative GPA of 2.80 or above for all courses taken in the two year curriculum.

c.A cumulative GPA of 2.80 or above for all required science courses.

d.A positive recommendation by the UTMB CLS Program Admissions Committee.

e.A positive record of ethical behavior during enrollment at Lone Star College System.

4.Enrollment in the UTMB CLS Program may be permitted after completion of the required Biotechnology curriculum, but before completion of all the required UTMB CLS prerequisites, and is contingent upon the following:

a.The student successfully completes the following prerequisites:

CHEM 1411 - General Chemistry I
CHEM 1412 - General Chemistry II
CHEM 2423 - Organic Chemistry

b.The conditions from Paragraphs 3a - 3e above are satisfied.

5.Repetition of courses may be considered acceptable if, in the opinion of the UTMB CLS Program Admissions Committee, the number of these courses is not excessive. All grades of a repeated course are calculated into the student's overall GPA (not simply the latest or best grade).

6.Following successful completion of the combined four-year curriculum at Lone Star College System and UTMB, the student will be granted a Bachelor of Science degree in Clinical Laboratory Sciences.

7.Students who do not fulfill the requirements of this early acceptance program are in no way precluded from applying to the UTMB CLS Program through the usual process.
