Dr. Abdelrahman A. Abdrabou

Fulbright Visiting Specialist: Direct Access to the Muslim World
Professor of English Education and Translation

Professor Abdrabou is a distinguished linguist, translator, literary expert, and professor.

He received a B.A. in English Language and Literature, M.A. in English and Teaching English as a Second Language from Portland State University, and his Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction: Teaching English as a Second Language from the University of Kansas. Since 1983, Prof. Abdrabou has taught at Sana’a University in Yemen and also served in a variety of senior academic administrative capacities. He is professor of Education, Curriculum and Instruction, English and Translation, Linguistics and Literature. Currently, he serves as Dean of the College of Languages at the University of Sana’a in the Republic of Yemen. Prof. Abdrabou served for several years as the Chair of the English Department in the School of Education and Professor of English and Translation. From 1996 to 2000 Prof. Abdrabou advised the Rector of the University of Aden for International Cooperation and Projects management. He has taught at the University of Minnesota, Portland State University, the University of Manchester, Institute of Science and Technology, the King Saud University in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Prof. Abdrabou has received numerous awards, among them the prestigious Fulbright scholarship for his M.A. studies and the US AID scholarship for doctoral studies.

Prof. Abdrabou is one of the world’s top Arabic/English translators. He has translated major documents from Arabic to English, among them the Constitution of the Republic of Yemen and all subsequent amendments, The Republic of Yemen’s General Elections and Referenda Law, the by-laws and political platforms of all major Yemeni political parties and organizations, selected chapters of the International Arabic Encyclopedia, and a study entitled Women’s Political Participation: Yemen’s 2003 Parliamentary Elections. He has also translated from English to Arabic such documents as Yemen’s Common Country Assessment Report 2005, issued by the United Nations; the Five Year Action Plan for the Higher Education Development Strategy (2006 – 2010); the script of a feature film entitled A New Day in Old Sana’a. Prof. Abdrabou has published in various journals in both English and Arabic. He is a member of The International Organization of the Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), The International Federation of Translators (FIT). The American Translators Association (ATA), and the European Society for Translation Studies (EST).
