These and other topics will be explored in the curriculum for core courses.

This is a proposed field study at Lone Star College - CyFair and we need your opinion!

To thank you for your participation we are offering you a free lunch to compensate you for your time. The focus group should take no more than 1 hour and all you will be asked to do is to share your opinion.

Thursday, Sept. 22^nd, Lecture: Minority Student Trends in Higher Education,

Dr. Victor Saenz, 11:30 a.m., CENT 152

Dr. Victor Saenz will present compelling research about the vanishing Latino and Black students in Higher Education in the United States. His work addresses the different structural, socio-cultural and psychological factors that are discouraging these groups from attending institutions of higher education. This presentation will address the impact of k-12 education as well as the family, peer relationships and job opportunities that affect these populations. He has been recognized nationwide for his work and some of his recent research includes students at Lone Star College – CyFair.

This would be a great presentation to integrate into classes that deal with inequality, education, statistics, research, multicultural issues, communications and writing.

Tuesday, Oct. 4^th, “Homeless by Choice” by Roy Juarez, Noon, ART 102

Roy Juarez is a nationally recognized motivational speaker that has appeared on CNN and has been featured in Chicken Soup for the Soul: Extraordinary Teens. At the age of 14 Roy was left homeless and had to care for his 2 year old brother and his 9 year old sister in San Antonio. His inspirational story recounts the challenges and triumphs that he experienced as he graduated from college and started his own business.

The Tuesday session will focus on students and should provide an opportunity for students to ask questions and understand his story.
