Distance Learning Roundtables - Discussion Boards

November 16th, 2012 by idhernandez

Discussion Board

Best Practices

Food for thought:

·         Set expectations early.

·         Decide how much you plan to engage in the discussion.

·         Develop a rubric (general or specific) so students know what to expect.

·         Be consistent: format, frequency, day…

·         Promote critical thinking by requiring they evaluate different types of information.

·         Encourage student informal interaction.

·         Create a community of shared knowledge.

Faculty,

We would like to extend a special invitation for you to attend or encourage your students participation at the following events:

Thursday, Sept. 22nd, Lecture: Minority Student Trends in Higher Education,

Dr. Victor Saenz, 11:30 a.m., CENT 152

This presentation will address the impact of k-12 education as well as the family, peer relationships and job opportunities that affect these populations. He has been recognized nationwide for his work and some of his recent research includes students at Lone Star College – CyFair.

His presentation will include information from his article “The Vanishing Latino Male in Higher Education. “ You can find the article at the following link: http://www.encuentrosleadership.org/images/uploads/The_Vanishing_Latino_Male.pdf

This would be a great presentation to integrate into classes that deal with inequality, education, statistics, research, multicultural issues, communications and writing.

Tuesday, Oct. 4th, “Homeless by Choice” by Roy Juarez, Noon, ART 102
