College Food Fair aids thousands of families

C:\Users\rosreyna\Desktop\_Work_FolderLone Star College-Kingwood, in collaboration with the Humble Area Assistance Ministries (HAAM), has helped thousands of students, employees and community members at its Community Food Fair.

“LSC-Kingwood recognizes that students, employees and community members have food needs that are not met. This event helps with those concerns,” said Brenda Stubbs, LSC-Kingwood professor and Community Food Fair coordinator.

During the academic year, the Community Food Fair will be on Sept. 13, Oct. 11, Nov. 8, Dec. 6, Feb. 14, March 7, April 11 and May 2 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. in the college’s Parking Lot G.

The Community Food Fair’s goal is to help alleviate hunger by providing free food once a month during the fall and spring semesters on a first-come, first-served basis. Food that is normally served include onions, potatoes, yellow/summer squash, carrots, cabbage, dried cranberries, fresh seasonal fruits, and various bread items. HAAM orders the food and the Montgomery Food Bank delivers it. Last year, each month’s cost was paid by LSC-Kingwood faculty, other individuals, and campus groups, which allowed HAAM to better meet its clients’ needs.

“Gary Wynne and I received the Community Food Fair money, which went to the HAAM representative for food purchase,” Stubbs said.

The Community Food Fair began in September 2015. Since then, approximately 900 volunteers have helped more than 3,000 households and close to 14,000 individuals in the Lake Houston and surrounding communities.
