By adding specific coursework to the AA degree, the Associate of Arts in Teaching is designed to transfer to a four year college or university for students whose career goal is to become a certified teacher in K-12 schools in Texas. Both the AA and AAT degree lead to 'highly qualified' status for paraprofessionals as defined by the 'No Child Left Behind' Act. Tthe EC-4 Early Childhood Specialization degree will be deactivated effective January 2010. No new students will be accepted for this certificate plan beginning in January. |

According to the ATPE Report of School Employee Compensation, the range of salaries for beginning teachers for the 08/09 school year was $33,320 - $46,770 for Region IV school districts and the average beginning teacher salary for Region IV school districts was $41,900.
According to this same source, the range of salaries for beginning teachers was $27,320 - $43,210 for Region VI school districts and the average beginning teacher salary for Region VI districts was $32,947. Some school districts may have sign-on bonuses for high need areas.
Job Growth:
The Texas Workforce Commission reports that the projection for job growth in the Gulf Coast region for Elementary, Middle, and Secondary Teachers occupations from 2006 through 2016 is 51%, 48%, and 40% respectively.
TWC predicts that Middle School Teacher is one of the occupations that will add the most jobs during this time period while Elementary School Teacher will be one of the fastest growing occupations in the Gulf Coast area.
