“We are still open” is the tagline that Lone Star College-Kingwood has adopted since Hurricane Harvey caused millions of dollars in damages.
Although six of the nine buildings are closed and undergoing restoration, the college campus is excited to host its Open House on Saturday, April 7 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. in the Student Conference Center (SCC). At the annual event, potential students, parents and community members will have an opportunity to visit with various credit, workforce, continuing education and student services programs offered at the college.
“The purpose of this year’s Open House is to welcome the community to LSC-Kingwood, show them that we are still open, and that we are still providing quality education and services,” said Nicole Keenan, director of admissions and outreach.
Academic, workforce, and continuing education programs are designed for students who desire short-term training programs to quickly enter the workforce, and for students who will pursue a bachelor’s degree at a four-year institution. Participating departments will provide handouts and answer all related questions. There will be food, music, and door prizes (must be present to win).
“We offer noncredit courses for students wishing to obtain a new skill but not college credit. We also offer associate and certificate-level programs that offer college credit and a pathway toward a four-year institution. We even have a program in the summer for our younger population called Discovery College. No matter what your age or educational level, we have something for you,” Keenan said. “Attendees will also have the opportunity to explore program majors, obtain information on financial assistance, apply for admissions and/or financial aid, and if eligible, register for classes.”
