Speech Team Takes 1st Place at National Tournament

During the week of April 7 though 12, the Lone Star College-North Harris competitive speech team participated in this year’s Phi Rho Pi National Speech Tournament taking 1st place in both Individual Events Sweepstakes as well as Overall (Individual Events and Debate Events) Sweepstakes in the Mid Size Entry Division. More than 400 competitors representing 67 community colleges across the country came to Portland, Oregon for the event.
 
All five of the LSC-North Harris students who entered into the tournament made it to the finals round at this year’s competition.

Aaron Phillips placed in the top 5 Overall Top Speakers by taking a Silver Award in Reader's Theater, a Gold Award in Poetry Interpretation, and a Gold Award in Dramatic Interpretation. Adriana Boyd placed in the top 6 Overall Top Speakers by winning a Silver Award in Reader's Theater, a Gold Award in Poetry Interpretation and a Gold Award in Programmed Oral Interpretation.  Earline Luellen placed in the top 20 Overall Top Speakers by taking a Silver Award in Reader's Theater, a Gold Award in Poetry Interpretation and a Bronze in Dramatic Interpretation.  Derek Lloyd won a Silver Award in Reader's Theater and a Silver Award in Prose Interpretation.  Amanda Vennebush won a Silver Award in Reader's Theater and a Bronze in Prose Interpretation. Overall, LSC-North Harris took 3 of the 5 Gold Awards presented in Poetry Interpretation.

Wade Hescht, the Director of Forensics for LSC-North Harris, was re-elected to National Office as Phi Rho Pi's National Secretary-Treasurer for a second term.
