The Business and Professional Office Department at Lone Star College-Kingwood offers training and courses to give you the tools you need to jumpstart a new career or qualify for that next promotion. If you are interested in any type of office work, you will want to investigate the two-year degree in Professional Office Technology. The degree is perfect for residents trying to balance work and family obligations with college study. The business department offers a full range of courses that may be completed on online using a home computer, enabling students to set their own hours and pace for completing college courses.
Students in the Professional Office Technology AAS program will learn MS Office software, which includes Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Other required courses include business math, business English, keyboarding, administrative office procedures, project management, administrative systems, Web page design and many more.
Professional recognition through upgraded skills, certification or licensure provides a distinct advantage in the job market. "Students will graduate from this program with excellent computer skills as well as outstanding communication and office skills," said Sherry Young, Lone Star College-Kingwood program coordinator. "The job market for this area is wide open with many jobs in the Houston area."
"The Business and Professional Office Department takes pride in developing students for the job market," said Linda Holcomb, business department chair. "Each of our classes offers examples about how to succeed in the ‘real world', as well as the skills of the course."
One- and two-semester certificates are available in medical and legal professional office technology, management, logistics and accounting. Students may also elect to seek an AAS degree in Management, Logistics, Accounting, Medical, Legal, and now Professional Office through a four-semester program consisting of courses from the core academic area and business or logistics management.
