AAS 3-D Animation Graduate Awarded $60,000 Scholarship

With a $60,000 scholarship and a degree in 3D Animation, Lone Star College-Kingwood graduate Paul Pepera is well on his way to a successful future.  His scholarship to the Savannah College of Art and Design was awarded based on Pepera's grades and portfolio from Lone Star College-Kingwood.

Pepera choose Lone Star College-Kingwood for the 3D animation program offered, "3D animation and art is right up my alley.  I saw a good opportunity to get a nice degree under my belt and prepare for industry."  Location was another deciding factor in choosing Lone Star College-Kingwood, he's a Kingwood resident so commuting was a breeze.

The classes offered through the visual communication department at Lone Star College-Kingwood gave him the chance to work in clay animation, flash, 3D, many different programs and all the latest software.  "(Lone Star College-Kingwood) was a lot of fun, with great teachers and classes that were challenging, but fun and rewarding," Pepera said.

"Students in our program are learning the latest skills in graphic design, video, 3D animation, and the web using the latest software in state-of-the art labs; preparing them for exciting careers in visual communication," says Donna Monteferante, lead faculty for visual communication at Lone Star College-Kingwood.

The final project before graduation was a short film.  The professor ran the class like a business to prepare students for the workforce.  "Our teacher treated us as employees.  We had to pitch a script and story and after it was approved, we had to fill deadlines and requirements."

Asked if he would recommend Lone Star College-Kingwood to other students like himself, he replied, "An education at Lone Star College-Kingwood will definitely prepare you for a career in industry.  Businesses don't really look at a masters or bachelors' degree, but really focus on the portfolio work.  I had a great portfolio developing class with Donna Monteferante."  He added, "I found that virtually all of my Lone Star College-Kingwood classes transferred to Savannah College."

In addition to his scholarship, he also landed a job with Time Gate Studios, a video game company based in Sugarland.  There he will be working on next generation game design, doing animation and 3D modeling work.  "My big dream for now is to go to Savannah, get a nice degree, and stay in the industry with a good position as an art director or creative lead.  Possibly for the long term future is to get into movie production in Hollywood."  Pepera is enthusiastic about his future, "It's very open, a lot of fun!"

Professor Monteferante says, "It's an exciting time to be involved in the field of visual communication. With the evolution of video and the web, the influence of the iPod and our cell phones, even print is being seen like it has never been seen before!"

Lone Star College-Kingwood's visual communication program offers a 2-year associate of applied science degree and several one-year certificates. Graduates of the Visual Communication Program enter the workforce as Graphic Designers, Web Designers, Video and Post-Production Editors and 3D Animators.
