HOUSTON (Jan. 15, 2010) – Dancing and live entertainment are the highlights of the Lone Star College-Kingwood’s and the Kingwood Musical Arts Society’s (KMAS) annual Valentine Scholarship Dance and Silent Auction on Feb. 13 from 7-11 p.m. The black-tie optional event will be held at the Nathaniel Center in Kingwood.
“This is a wonderful event to attend because it helps raise money for LSC-Kingwood’s Fine Arts Scholarship Fund as well as raise money for KMAS,” David Livingston, chair of KMAS’ board of directors, said. “We entered into a strategic partnership with LSC-Kingwood in 1996 which has allowed us to increase musical exposure within the community.”
The annual scholarship dance and silent auction will feature entertainment from the Kingwood Big Band and members of theKingwood Chorale, both under KMAS. Members of these organizations are either former or current students of LSC-Kingwood. In addition to the entertainment, guests will enjoy hors d'oeuvres and a dessert bar.
Originally formed by Lone Star College-Kingwood in the fall of 2004, the 18 members of the Kingwood Big Band are from Kingwood and the surrounding area and include college students, music educators, professional musicians, businessmen, engineers, doctors, professors, accountants and other professions. This varied group is brought together by their love of jazz and their joy of performing great music to appreciative audiences.
The Kingwood Chorale &Chamber Orchestra wasformed in 1988 by KMAS and is currently under the direction of Dr. Todd Miller, artistic director for the chorale and professor of music and fine arts department chair at LSC-Kingwood. It is offered as a credit course at the college and serves eight to 10 students per semester. Community members and former students make up the balance of the chorale, which usually performs twice a year - once in the spring and once in the fall.
