LSC-Kingwood offers advanced Excel, Word courses

HOUSTON (March 9, 2010) – Lone Star College-Kingwood’s Continuing Education Department answered to the demand of more computer classes by offering Excel III and Word III this spring.  These advanced classes will help students better prepare for their current and future employment.

“Students asked for more advanced instruction in these two courses in order to help better prepare them for the current work environment,” Robert Floyd, part-time Continuing Education program coordinator, said. “The skills learned are necessary for employment in today’s job market and makes the student more ‘marketable’.”

Excel III explores advanced concepts in electronic spreadsheets. Topics address macro programming features, database functions such as merging or linking spreadsheets, data file transfer and Boolean functions. Prerequisite for this class is Excel II or equivalent. The program will begin May 3-May 24 on Mondays only from 6-10 p.m. in CLA 112. Classes on Mondays through Thursdays will take place May 24-May 27 from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in CLA 112.

Word III will teach students advanced instruction in document preparation, editing and formatting. It will emphasize special problems encountered in business and industry and new features of Microsoft Word 2007. The prerequisite for this class is Word II or equivalent. Classes on Mondays only begin March 29 through April 19 from 6-10 p.m. in CLA 106. Classes on Mondays through Thursdays will take place on May 17 through May 20 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in CLA 112.

“In order for students to take the level III advanced courses, they first must have completed our corresponding second course or have their instructor’s approval,” Floyd said.

The cost of the program is $99 per 16-hour course plus the cost of the text book and a USB flash drive. For those who have taken the first two courses, the textbook is the same. Other computer/technology courses offered through the Continuing Education department are A+ Certification Training, AutoCAD, Microsoft Office 2007 programs, QuickBooks, Web Page Design and more.
