Global Awareness Day Set for April 14 at Lone Star College-Montgomery

Lone Star College-Montgomery's International Student Organization has scheduled a variety of activities for Global Awareness Day, set for Wednesday, April 14.

The free event kicks off at 11 a.m., with an array of cultural displays from different countries located in the fountain courtyard area outside Building C. An international luncheon that includes food from a variety of countries around the world will also take place around the courtyard. The event will also feature two performances, including Capoeira, a presentation from the Brazilian Arts Foundation that explores Brazil through dance, music, and acrobatics.

“Capoeira has deep roots and heritage that has contributed to the rich culture of modern day Brazil,” said Terry Rich, advisor at LSC-Montgomery and coordinator of the event. “Through an explosion of spins and kicks, the dance requires coordination, cooperation, teamwork, movement, rhythm, and agility.”

Also performing will be the Mitotiani-Aztec Dancers, who bring the world of ancient Mexico alive in a performance of traditional Aztec dancing, storytelling, poetry, and songs. Throughout this cultural and educational performance, attendees will learn about the history, philosophy, language, culture, ceremonies, foods, and arts of the Aztecs.

If the weather is disruptive, the event will re-locate to the Commons (Building A).

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our community and students to learn more about the international cultures and reflect upon their place in the world,” said Rich. “If anyone attended a previous Global Awareness Day event, they’ll know that it was excellent, and this year should be even better.”
