Learn how to become a teacher at LSC-Kingwood

The current economic situation has not impacted the growth of students in elementary, middle and high schools and teachers are needed to meet the demand.

With a bachelor’s degree and passion to make a difference in the lives of young people, interested people can learn more about Lone Star College-Kingwood’s Alternative Teacher Certification Program through an information session on Sept. 19 at 5 p.m. in SFA 125/126. The meeting will provide information on critical areas as well as allow potential teachers a chance to speak with advising, admissions and financial aid personnel.

“The Alternative Teacher Certification Program at Lone Star College-Kingwood is well respected by the school districts in the greater Houston area for the quality of alternative certified teachers we produce. We have information sessions monthly for prospective candidates of our program,” said Jennifer Leadbetter, ATCP program coordinator.

The ATCP program has partnerships with more than 45 school districts, 50 certification areas, flexible course schedules and a choice between two routes to certification: internship or clinical teaching. The internship requires a student to complete a one-year internship with full salary and benefits, under the supervision of the ATCP. In this route, the student must secure their own teaching job. Clinical teaching involves one semester of non-paid placement in a school district. Clinical teachers work with a mentor teacher at an area K-12 school and with a LSC-Kingwood supervisor.

The teacher certification program at LSC-Kingwood is one of the largest community college teacher certification programs in the state of Texas with more than 1,400 students who have become certified teachers in the past five years through this program.
