With one of the largest international distribution ports lapping at our door, jobs are plentiful in Houston for new logistics graduates. In fact, the logistics program at Lone Star College-Kingwood had more calls from employers last year than they had students to fill positions.
"People always have to move goods from place to place, and if it is not done efficiently or correctly, companies can lose a great deal of money," said Linda Holcomb, Lone Star College-Kingwood logistics instructor. "Logistics is the catch-all phrase for the transportation, warehousing and distribution of these goods."
Well-trained logistics workers are in high demand and Lone Star College-Kingwood offers a short-term business certificate in this burgeoning field. The first line leader logistics certificate is a five-course program that can be earned in one semester. This program allows students to move into the industry quickly or to upgrade current work skills. Courses include Intro to Business Logistics; Intro to Materials Handling; Warehouse and Distribution; Problem Solving and Supervision.
Students may also elect to seek a one-year certificate in international business, also offered by the college. International business skills dove-tail nicely with the logistics field, Holcomb added, and the combination is often very attractive to employees.
"The classes in our certificate program transfer directly into the district's two-year associate degree program, offered on the Cy-Fair campus," Holcomb said. "Many students elect to complete the certificate program and go to work before beginning the associate program."
