LSC-CyFair hosts nursing exchange students from Mexico three weeks through prestigious FIPSE grant

Lone Star College-CyFair’s Associate Degree Nursing professor Angela Anderson joined five nursing exchange students from Colima, Mexico, for a behind-the-scenes look at one of the college’s clinical site partners St. Catherine’s Hospital.

Recently taking a tour of St. Catherine’s Hospital with the hospital’s Director of Med/Surg and Pediatrics Judie Haurich were Anderson and exchange students Ricardo Rojas, Rafa Valdovinos, Juan Carlos Rodriguez, Kenia Tejeda and Israel Duran.

Through a prestigious and competitive Fund for the Improvement of Post-secondary Education (FIPSE) grant that LSC-CyFair received in 2009, funding was provided for an exchange program between Canada, Mexico and the United States.

“The FIPSE grant provided the opportunity for nursing students to gain intimate knowledge of the diversity in health care delivery systems, health practices and cultural values that allow them to compare and contrast the nursing professions in their home and host countries,” said Jane Hagele, LSC-CyFair’s Director of Nursing Programs.

During their three-week stay, the nursing exchange students and their instructor lived with volunteer host families. To learn about the United States health care system, they not only visited a number of area health care facilities, but attended lecture and lab classes alongside of LSC-CyFair students.
