Music lovers will want to mark their calendars for two upcoming concerts at Lone Star College-Kingwood. The Kingwood Community Symphonic Band and the LSC-Kingwood Jazz Ensemble will perform on Thursday, March 6 and then the Kingwood Big Band will perform on Friday, March 7.
The Kingwood Community Symphonic Band was formed in the fall of 2005 and is made up of students and community members. They will be performing the 2nd Suite in F by Gustav Holst, the finale of Tchaikovsky's 6th Symphony, the Olympia Hippodrome March by Alexander and highlights from the Wizard of Oz by Harold Arlen.
The Jazz Ensemble is comprised of LSC-Kingwood students and led this year by adjunct professor Patrick Brink. They will perform a selection of contemporary jazz hits.
The community based Kingwood Big Band will delight audience members with a selection of contemporary and traditional jazz standards, including The Very Thought of You by Ray Noble, Nice Job if You Can Get it by George Gershwin, Summer Wind by Johnny Mercer and Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most, made famous by Ella Fitzgerald and Stan Getz.
The Kingwood Big Band is led by LSC-Kingwood band director James Stubbs. The band is made up of both amateur and professional musicians from the community. Last summer they were honored with an invitation to perform at the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival. In addition, the band performed concerts in Rome and Assisi as part of their European tour.
Both upcoming concerts will be held at the Student Center/Fine Arts Building Performing Arts Theatre at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free for the Kingwood Community Symphonic Band and Jazz Ensemble performance. General admission is $15 for the Kingwood Big Band, with discounts for seniors and students ($10 senior, $5 students). All proceeds of the Kingwood Big Band performances will go to support scholarships for LSC-Kingwood Fine Arts students and the activities of the Kingwood Musical Arts Society.
Coming up in the future, the Chamber Singers and the LSC-Kingwood Jazz Ensemble will perform for free March 28 in the SFA Performing Arts Theatre. Then on April 26, the Kingwood Chorale will perform at Strawbridge Methodist Church.
