ABC's Channel 13 News Anchor Art Rascon on Campus

Published on: April 08, 2008

Art Rascon, a familiar figure as a news reporter and anchor on ABC's Channel 13, will bring a wealth of wisdom to students and community members when he discusses "The Need for Business Students to Have a Global Perspective" at Lone Star College-Kingwood.

Rascon will present his topic to students and faculty on Thursday, April 10 from 12:30 p.m. to 1:20 p.m. in the CLA Teaching Theatre (CLA 114). The public is invited to attend this free event.

Rascon will discuss the importance of understanding today's world and truly recognizing that we live in a global society.  Today practically everything we do and see has global implications, including the clothes we wear, the toys and electronics we buy and the cars we drive.

"Technology has linked us in ways never realized when these students were toddlers," says Rascon,  "No matter what field of industry these students will eventually find themselves in, a well-read or traveled person, will always have an edge over someone who lives in a bubble."

Linda Holcomb, chair of the Business and Professional Office Department at LSC-Kingwood says most businesses have international ties and most banks now have foreign investors.

Additionally, the U.S. is still the largest exporter in the world and with more and more international workplaces, our personal lives are often linked with those across the globe.

"Events in other parts of the world have a direct effect on the U.S. economy and U.S. business.  Look at the toy issues last Christmas," Holcomb says.  "LSC- Kingwood discusses global issues in most of our business courses."

LSC-Kingwood's business department offers a certificate in International Business that prepares students to work for import/export related employers such as freight forwarders and custom brokerage firms.  Other certificates available include General Business, Small Business Management, Human Resource Management and Marketing, as well as a two-year degree in Management.
