LSC-Kingwood hosts Women Empowerment Conference

Published on: June 09, 2011

Encouraging women to reach their dreams and overcome adversity through education is the main goal of Lone Star College-Kingwood’s Women Empowerment Conference.

This event is on Thursday, June 23 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in SFA 125 and is free to all women in the community.  The target audience is women, those in the community as well as LSC-Kingwood students and their families, who have a need.

“The purpose of this conference is to empower women with not only inspirational stories, but to also provide them with community resources to get through their difficult situations,” said LSC-Kingwood student and event coordinator, Brittany Trice. “Our goal is to also encourage them to meet their educational goals by enrolling in classes on campus.”

At the conference, students and community leaders will share their triumphant stories in an effort to help women identify and inspire others to reach their full potential in life. Topics will include overcoming and surviving abuse, serving in the military, single parenting, loss, financial struggles, faith, health and wellness, and business. Attendees will have an opportunity to learn about a variety of community resources, visit campus information booths, enjoy lunch, receive freebies, and network with women who share similar stories.

Participating community partners include the Texas Workforce Commission, The Mission Northeast, Beauty for Ashes, Women’s Business Center (Women’s Business Enterprise Alliance), Bizdex, Leaps and Bounds Tutorial Center, FamilyTime Crisis and Counseling Center and many more. Participating campus organizations include Students in Free Enterprise, Student Government Association, Continuing Education, Student Services, Kingwood Kidcare, Cosmetology, Dental Hygiene Association and others.

“In coordinating this event, I hope to show the community what possibilities are available when they attend college,” Trice said. “We hope they will produce their own action plan to use as well as utilize available resources.”
