Getting your kids excited about reading and writing and teaching them the fundamentals to be successful is the goal of two classes at Lone Star College-Kingwood's Discovery College.
Secrets and Tricks of Successful Writers and Secrets and Tricks of Successful Readers will be taught by Carolyn Mashburn, a former teacher with over 35 years experience.
Children attending her courses will benefit from her many years teaching children and her recent work training teachers around the nation on reading and writing strategies.
In the Writers course each child will produce a book, from front to back cover. The books will be memories based on the child and their own interests and will be written in vignettes, short half page entries.
"We're going to talk about all the secrets that great writers know. It will be like opening the magician's box and kids will find that writing isn't hard when they know these tricks," says Mashburn.
Secrets and Tricks of Successful Writers will be offered June 23 through June 27, 2008 in both the morning and afternoon. The morning session will be geared for children 12 to 14 and the afternoon session will be for children 9 to 11.
The reading course will teach children how to pick a book and simple strategies to make reading easier.
Mashburn says reading is an invisible skill. "You can't watch someone read and know how they are doing. We will work on making the invisible visible by having the kids use lots of visualization, drawing, and improvisation."
Secrets and Tricks of Successful Readers will be offered July 7 through July 11, 2008 in both the morning and afternoon. The morning session will be geared for children 12 to 14 and the afternoon session will be for children 9 to 11.
Both courses will improve and strengthen students test taking skills, including the reading and writing portions of the TAKS test.
Discovery College offers many courses for children ages 6 through 14. Courses run Monday through Friday and change weekly. Sessions start at $85. For more information and a complete list of classes, call 281-312-1660 or go to Kingwood.LoneStar.edu/discoverycollege.
