Community invited to participate in annual Heart Walk at LSC-Kingwood

Published on: October 28, 2011

Area residents are encouraged to lace up their walking shoes and get ready to walk for a good cause as Lone Star College-Kingwood hosts the American Heart Association (AHA) Heart Walk and Heart Fest on Saturday, Nov. 12. This annual event is designed to raise awareness and funds for the American Heart Association’s research and education programs.

Registration and warm-up will begin at 8 a.m. and the walk begins at 9 a.m.

“The walk is open to individuals and businesses in the area and walkers at every fitness level are encouraged to participate,” said Morgan Dean, AHA’s corporate marketing director.

The walk is part of AHA’s “Start” program. The program encourages walking at home and work. “Start” calls upon Americans and employers to fight the sedentary life and adopt a healthier lifestyle through walking.

Those who raise $100 for the American Heart Association will get a Greater Lake Houston Heart Walk T-shirt. Those who raise $250 will get a “Superstar” ribbon to wear during the walk and will be invited to a special “Superstar Breakfast” the morning of the walk.

The 5K or 3.1-mile course travels around the campus and most walkers should complete the course in 30 to 45 minutes. Participants are encouraged to bring their cheering squad to give them support as they cross the finish line.

Those choosing not to walk can enjoy the Heart Fest, which begins at the same time. There will be heart-healthy food, giveaways, interactive activities, live music, sponsor booths, and more. Everything at this fun-filled, family oriented event located behind the Performing Arts Center is free with an emphasis on heart and health.

Employers and groups are encouraged to become sponsors and organize walking teams of any size. These activities help raise awareness and money to defeat a disease that devastates millions and kills more than 910,000 Americans each year.
