Seminars Offered to Improve Study Skills

Would you like to complete a college degree but fear the classes may be too difficult?

No need to worry. The helpful tutors in the Learning Center at LSC-Kingwood offer one-on-one assistance with class work and conduct short seminars throughout the semester to assist students in developing better study skills.

Success Seminars are offered throughout the semester, free of charge, to students and the community. During the 30-minute classes conducted at 12:30 Tuesdays and Thursdays in the Learning Center, participants can learn helpful study and life skills tips.

"We will discuss topics to help students take their skills to college level," said Janis Terry, Learning Center Manager at LSC-Kingwood. "We give the information they need and have a chance to interact with them so they can take it back to the classroom and be successful."

Participants will learn effective reading strategies, tips for writing research papers, vocabulary skills, spelling secrets and much more. Also, the seminar series includes sessions on cultivating financial stability. Students will learn to how to use credit wisely, balance a checkbook, securing financial aid for college and how to create a budget.

"Students unable to attend at 12:30 p.m. can call and make an appointment for a one-on-one session," said Dr. Terry.

For students needing to improve grammar skills, the Success Seminar Series offers a grouping of classes that will not only prepare the student for the required Grammar Proficiency Exam but also bring success in the English classroom.

Terry said that the majority of the students who have participated in the grammar Success Seminars have passed the mandatory Grammar Proficiency Exam.
