The Lone Star College-Kingwood KidCare is now registering for the upcoming fall semester. Students taking courses on the LSC-Kingwood campus in the evenings are eligible to enroll their children in the program.
KidCare is licensed by the Texas Department of Family Protective Services and operated and managed by the Continuing Education division. In 2000, the college began offering on-campus child care services for its students attending evening classes.
"KidCare has been extremely popular since it began operation," said Frances Andrews. "It has allowed many students to enroll in classes who otherwise may not have been able to continue their education. There aren't many other options for evening child care in the area. "
The service fills a tremendous need among the college's students. In an online survey conducted prior to the opening of the child care center, more than 70 percent of the student respondents indicated that lack of childcare had prevented them from attending classes.
KidCare provides supervision for children 4 to 12 years of age while their parents attend evening classes. Parents must provide a copy of their course schedule, a birth certificate for the child, immunization records, and a completed enrollment form when registering for the KidCare program. Space is limited and enrollments will be taken on a first come basis. Fees for KidCare services will be assessed by LSC-Kingwood at $25 per child, per semester.
The center operates Monday-Thursday from 5 to 10 p.m. Children enjoy games, reading, music, crafts, limited computer access, and the occasional movie while attending KidCare. Several of the KidCare staff members have been employed in the center since 2002 and look forward to seeing new and returning children this fall.
