Imani “Clio” Lang named 2012-2013 Poet Laureate for LSC-North Harris

Lone Star College-North Harris student, Imani “Clio” Lang, has been selected as the college’s 2012-2013 Poet Laureate. Lang has been a student at LSC-North Harris since August 2012.

Lang was chosen for her new role based on her submissions to the college’s annual poet laureate contest. Current students are asked to submit four samples of their work which, is then reviewed by a committee of judges. Lang’s passion for poetry was clear, and her poems stood out among the rest.

“No one told me to write poetry, I just found it,” said Lang. “To me, writing is about rhythm, rhythm is about space, everything around you.”

Her journey to become a poet started long before she arrived at LSC-North Harris. Lang started writing poetry when she was 13 years old. Her favorite poets include Sylvia Plath, Anne Sexton, Oscar Wilde, John Keats and Edgar Allen Poe.

Lang is very enthusiastic about sharing her words with others, and as Poet Laureate, she plans on becoming involved with the many activities and events on campus to showcase her work.

After she finishes her associate degree at Lone Star College-North Harris, she plans on enrolling at the Savannah College of Art and Design, a university of creative careers in Savannah, Georgia.

“That’s the place for me,” said Lang, “I’m looking forward to sharing ideas with other artists.”

In addition to writing, Lang also enjoys music and has a philanthropic passion for wanting to help children find their voice to be heard. In the future, she hopes to travel to some unique places around the world for inspiration for her writing.
