‘You’re Getting Sleepy’: LSC-Montgomery Welcomes Hypnotist William Mitchell

CONROE (February 17, 2015) – “Close your eyes and picture yourself traveling on an elevator up several floors. As you travel up each floor, you are getting sleepier and sleepier….”
The Lone Star College-Montgomery psychology club and Psi Beta, the college’s psychology honor society, welcome Dr. William Mitchell, a practicing clinical hypnotist and certified hypnosis instructor, to show enthusiasts and skeptics just how cliché that line really is.

Dr. Mitchell will provide volunteers a chance to be hypnotized while audience members are entertained. The show, which is free to the public and open to all ages, will take place in the theatre of the Performing Arts Center, building D, on Thursday, February 26, at 11:30 a.m., with a reception following in the lobby from 12:30-1 p.m.

Dr. Mitchell, president and founder of the Mitchell Institute of Professional Hypnosis and Personal Motivation Hypnosis Clinics, provides training and certification in the use of hypnosis in order to prepare students to become hypnosis professionals. He has successfully hypnotized thousands, works with hundreds of clinics, is a former adjunct faculty member at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield, IL, consults with businesses and schools countrywide, and has given several hundred training sessions in over 15 states.

“Our general psychology classes study hypnosis and its phenomenon of heightened suggestibility,” said Dr. Karen Buckman, professor of psychology at LSC-Montgomery. “As a well-known hypnotist with a varied background in instruction, speaking, counseling, business ownership and more, we felt this would be both educational and entertaining for many.”

Hypnotherapy is a growing field of healing, utilizing medical and therapeutic applications that allow the mind-body connection to be used for habit control, phobia elimination, fostering self-improvement and inner peace, and to overcome a myriad of life challenges.

In the quickly evolving field of holistic health and alternative medicine – where the focus of healing is on the body, mind and spirit – a hypnotist often works under professional referral to treat pain or anger management, addictions, phobias, stress, insomnia, childbirth, psychotherapy and more.

The power of hypnosis begins with accessing the part of the subconscious mind where human habits are deeply rooted. Hypnotherapists induce a relaxed trance state, much like daydreaming, while focusing intently on the subject at hand. At that time, while the mind is highly suggestible, it is able to completely embrace an introduced idea and then alter its behavior.

Dr. Mitchell, who received his bachelor of arts from Culver-Stockton College and his master of divinity from Texas Christian University Brite Divinity School and Phillips University Graduate Seminary in Oklahoma, did his doctoral work at Texas Christian University, completed a professional doctorate of hypnotherapy from Madison University, and is currently the pastor of a small congregation in Stonington, Illinois.
