LSC-Montgomery Nursing Student Honored With Scholarship, Chronicle Recognition

Lone Star College-Montgomery nursing student Darla Miller was recently recognized during nurse's week for her hard work and dedication in the May 2015 Salute to Nurses edition of the Houston Chronicle, at a recognition luncheon, and with a student scholarship.
For LSC-Montgomery nursing student Darla Miller, the
distinction to be recognized in the special May 2015 Salute to Nurses edition of the Houston Chronicle is not just about her hard work and dedication, but also is a reflection on the caliber of the college’s program, professors and students.

“I don’t think it’s even about me and my own efforts, honestly,” Miller said. “I’m here because I’ve had a lot of people supporting me and believing in me.”

As one of three students in the metropolitan area selected from over 700 faculty nominations, Miller was recognized during Nurse's Week in the Houston Chronicle, at a recognition luncheon, and with a $1000 scholarship.

Originally from Oklahoma City, OK, Miller dabbled in horticulture and landscape designbefore relocating to Texas in 1999 and accepting a job at Conroe Regional Hospital. There she was led by a LSC-Montgomery nursing professor to a career in nursing. At the peak of her interest, she applied and was accepted to the college’s licensed vocational nursing (LVN) program and graduated in 2003.

After taking time off from school to work at an in-patient hospital, home health care, and hospice, Miller found herself returning in 2014 to LSC-Montgomery to enroll in the LVN-to-registered nurse (RN) transition program, with the hopes of transferring to the University of Texas at Arlington to complete her master’s degree.

With the nursing faculty at LSC-Montgomery as her driving force, coupled with her childhood dream to be a teacher, Miller’s ultimate goal is to return to the college as a nursing professor.

“They are amazing,” Miller gloats. “They push you to learn. They build you up, they give you confidence and they motivate you.”

Miller, who is so busy with course work, her Honors Program obligations, Student Nurse Organization duties, and managing a household of six, has not really had time to slow down and acknowledge what this honor really means to her.

“Receiving this award gives me more incentive to keep going for it,” she said. “It helps me remember that all of this hard work will pay off and allow me to serve people and give back to the community.”
