Lone Star College students shared stories of overcoming obstacles and finding success at the 25th annual LSC Chancellor’s Breakfast presented by Lone Star College Foundation and sponsored by Entergy, Texas.
The Chancellor’s Breakfast recognizes 11 students, one from each of the Lone Star College campuses and centers, for their winning essay. Each student received a $1,000 scholarship which is made possible due to the generosity of LSC Foundation donors and supporters.
“These very talented students help remind everyone of our mission,” said Stephen C. Head, Ph.D., LSC chancellor. “It is an honor for me to listen to them share their personal stories of success.”
Of the 11 students who received the scholarship, one from each campus was selected to present their winning essay. The six student selected speakers were: Mikayla Kracko, LSC-CyFair; Lutricia Wheeler, LSC-Kingwood; Abigail Jones, LSC-Montgomery; Belten Langmia, LSC-North Harris; Stephen Crowell, LSC-Tomball; and Deven Savage, LSC-University Park.
LSC students were encouraged to participate in an essay contest on “How my Lone Star College experience has influenced my life.” Winners are selected by campus committees before the breakfast event, which was held Feb. 7 in the Lone Star Community Building located at LSC System Office in The Woodlands.
Other LSC scholarship recipients recognized were Ruby Qattan, LSC-Atascocita Center; Elizabeth Mitchell, LSC-Cypress Center; Rioghonosa Okpiabhele, LSC-Fairbanks Center; Disha Patel, LSC-Greenspoint Center; and McKenna Bailey, LSC-Montgomery.
“These scholarships could not be awarded without the generous support the Lone Star College Foundation receives from the many individuals, families, businesses, and foundations which help Lone Star College students reach their goals,” said Nicole Robinson Gauthier, CFRE, LSC Foundation executive director. “The students’ stories are truly inspirational to everyone who heard them.”

Mikayla Kracko, LSC-CyFair
“While I initially chose Lone Star College because of its affordability, this college experience turned out to be exactly what I needed. It changed my life by helping me find my passion to teach math and help the next generation have a solid foundation in math to pursue their own dreams. It changed my life by welcoming me into a community of learners and helping me see that we all work better together.”

“Every curve ball that is thrown in life is meant to stimulate growth, but sometimes we need a little push along the way. I am grateful to have had a professor that was passionate enough himself about education to talk some sense into me. I am proud to say that I got my drive back and life has been good ever since. God makes no mistakes.”

“Lone Star College has not only made me a better student and friend, but it has given something that I do not think I could find at any other higher education institution: hope. By being provided unparalleled assistance and an overflow of support in all things by advisors, teachers, and peers, I have hope that I will be a registered nurse in a short few years. Lone Star College has given me more than I ever expected, and is genuinely opening doors.”

“The college has given me the opportunity to meet new people from diverse backgrounds with different points of view, and has trained me on how to communicate and function well in a team. I have gained the necessary skills needed to travel life from LSC-North Harris, which will be used for the betterment of my community here, and in Cameroon.”
