LSC-Tomball’s Civic Engagement Internship Program Nets its Highest Number of Intern Placements

TOMBALL, Texas – LSC-Tomball Student Jacob Files has a dream of one day becoming the governor of Texas and thanks to the Civic Engagement Internship Program at LSC-Tomball, he says he’s on the track to making his dream a reality.

“I’m working in the district office of Congressman Kevin Brady, and I’m really enjoying it,” Files said. “My goal is to become governor someday, so I’m making the most of this opportunity.”

LSC-Tomball Professor of Government Cory Colby said Files is one of several students making up “the highest number of interns LSC has ever had in this internship program.”

“I always try to do something big each semester, so I am thrilled to have placed four interns through the Civic Engagement Internship Program for this spring,” Colby said. “This group of students is very diverse in their stories and backgrounds.”

Additional students receiving internship placement are:

  • Julian Joseph, who has been placed at Lone Star College System Office to work on the Student Success Institute initiative
  • Cynthia Romero, who has been placed with CLASS and the Diversity Committee.
  • Alejandro “Alex” De Santiago, who has been placed with the Greater Tomball Area Chamber of Commerce.

Students, according to Colby, will receive Government 2389 course credit for their time in the internship. De Santiago said his internship has placed him in the perfect environment when it comes to helping him know the ins and outs of business development.

“Four years ago I started art painting as a hobby; more recently I’ve been starting the building blocks for my own business because I was told that people look for artists like myself, so I’ve been getting out of my comfort zone painting on denim jeans, jackets, and now Yeti cups. Working at the Chamber of Commerce gives me the opportunity to see how business works, so I’m really where I need to be while I’m also in the beginning stages of starting my own business.”

Colby went on to note that the four interns are great examples of the kind of unique and high-impact learning experiences LSC-Tomball offers as a college that connects student learning with personal development.

“They have been carefully placed in their areas of interest to have the greatest impact and connection,” Colby stressed, before adding, “I received a message from one student after asking him how his first

meeting went, and he said, ‘This is exactly the kind of work I want to be doing.’ What better praise is there than that for any educator to hear?’”

For Files, his internship at Congressman Brady’s office has only intensified his desire to pursue a career in politics.

“This internship has provided me with the opportunity to make connections with people,” Files said. “I’ve discovered that the more people you meet, the more connected you’ll be. I have learned so much more about this field, and I am looking forward to learning even more. As for my day, we really keep ourselves busy reading new bills on the floor. This has been a great experience.”
