LSC-University Park faculty elected to national and state board positions

(HOUSTON) Lone Star College-University Park faculty members David Gaer and Heather Brasher are representing the college as board members for national and state academic organizations, respectively.

Gaer, an associate professor of speech communication and chair of speech, psychology and sociology, was elected to serve as director for the American Forensics Association National Individual Events Tournament (AFA-NIET).

“In the 45-year history of this tournament, I will be the only community college representative to have been elected as the tournament director,” said Gaer. “I am both humbled and honored to serve.”

AFA-NIET is an annual intercollegiate speech competition with interpretation, public address and limited preparation events. Gaer has served as a member of the board of directors for more than 25 years, and as assistant tournament director. AFA is a national organization that promotes excellence in public speaking and debate through competitive events.

Brasher, as associate professor of biology, was elected to serve as secretary for the Texas Regional Advisory Board for Phi Theta Kappa (PTK). The three-year appointment changes roles each year, from secretary, then vice chair, and finally chair. PTK is a national honor society that promotes academic recognition of college students and creates opportunities for growth as scholars and leaders. Brasher is an adviser for PTK’s LSC-University Park chapter, Beta Epsilon Nu.

“I will make sure to represent LSC-University Park to the best of my ability and to do a good job serving the Texas region,” said Brasher. “I am grateful for the opportunity to work at such an amazing college. Being here has helped me grow in so many ways.”
