Lone Star College-North Harris celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

HOUSTON (September 13, 2018) – The Lone Star College-North Harris Latin American Student Organization (LASO) is showcasing Latino literature and culture during Hispanic Heritage Month, Sept. 15 – Oct. 15.

“Latinos form 44 percent of Houston's population and 33 percent of Houstonians are Mexican or Mexican American,” said LASO Advisor and English professor Antonio Diaz. “Hispanic Heritage Month is a great way to celebrate the diverse cultures that have contributed to Houston's success and prosperity.”

LSC-North Harris has a growing Hispanic student population. Based on student enrollment in spring 2018, 46 percent of students identified as Hispanic, a 10 percent increase in four years. LASO provides these students with an opportunity to learn about Latin American culture, promote awareness of cultural unity, and encourage leadership development among its members while offering services to LSC-North Harris.

Hispanic Heritage Month activities will kick-off with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Tuesday,
Sept. 18 at 1 p.m. in the LSC-North Harris Library, Second Floor. LASO, faculty, and staff will celebrate with a presentation and display on Latin literature, with a reception following.

Similar ribbon cutting events will be held on Monday, Sept. 17 at noon at the LSC-Victory Center, Lobby,
