College to host Healthy Harvest Food and Wellness Fair

Make plans to attend the Healthy Harvest Food and Wellness Fair on the morning of November 6 on Lone Star College-Tomball.  Hosted by Communities in Schools of Houston, the fair includes free, fresh produce, low cost flu shots, and other health screenings and assistance.  Everyone is welcome, including students and Tomball area residents.

“The food is free to LSC-Tomball students and everyone in the Tomball-area community, “said Kristin Carpenter, LCSW-S, the CIS Program Manager at LSC-Tomball, “And is available on a first come-first served basis until supplies run out.”

Unlike most food fairs which usually offer canned goods and staples, the Houston Food Bank is bringing its 18-Wheeler Mobile Pantry which is stocked with large bins of fresh produce.

“It’s like a free farmer’s market on 18 wheels,” Carpenter said, “We’re even suppling the bags for shopper’s to use.”

During the Healthy Harvest Food and Wellness Fair, flu shots will be available to both insured and uninsured visitors.  “Students and residents of the Tomball-area are eligible for the low cost flu shots, however there is a limited number of vouchers for those who are uninsured, so please bring your insurance card if you have health insurance,” Carpenter said.  Shots for Holly, a non-profit organization, is facilitating the flu shots provided by Walgreen’s Pharmacy.

Avenue 360, a federally qualified health center assisting underserved areas, will offer free HIV testing. Tomball Emergency Assistance Ministries (TEAM) along with Planned Parenthood will provide additional information and assistance.

The Healthy Harvest Food and Wellness Fair is November 6 from 9 a.m. to noon in the Beckendorf Conference Center on the north side of the LSC-Tomball campus. The Food Bank’s Mobile Pantry truck will be located in the parking lot outside the conference center.
