Cesar Chavez’s grandson to visit LSC-North Harris

C. L. Chavez, grandson of social activist and National Farm Workers Association co-founder Cesar Chavez, will be a guest speaker at Lone Star College-North Harris on Monday, April 1 at 10 a.m. in the Academic Building, Room 126.

LSC-North Harris’ Center for Civic Engagement brings Chavez to campus to help commemorate the college’s celebration of “Dolores Huerta and Cesar Chavez Day, as well as talk about his grandfather’s activism work and its modern-day relevance. Dolores Huerta, also a co-founder of the National Farm Workers Association, continues advocating for worker rights now in her eighties.

Chavez began his work with his grandfather’s movement at the age of five alongside his grandmother, Helen, stuffing envelopes for the Farm Workers Credit Union. From a young age, he also accompanied his grandfather to picket lines and demonstrations in the Central Valley as well as to major California cities. These experiences served as building blocks to foster his lifelong commitment to social change.

Today, Chavez serves as the general manager of The Chavez Foundation’s Bakersfield radio stations.

To celebrate Chavez’s grandfather’s legacy of work, in 2014 President Obama designated March 31 the federal commemorative holiday “Cesar Chavez Day.”  School districts including Houston, Austin and Fort Worth, all established Cesar Chavez Days. LSC-North Harris Center for Civic Engagement will build on those efforts by hosting a day of events on Monday, April 1.

In addition to the Chavez visit, activities include:

  • Workers’ Rights Workshop conducted by Fe y Justicia at 11 a.m. in the Academic Building, Room 126.
  • “Dolores” film screening and discussion at noon in Academic Building, Room 126.

All three events are free and open to the public. For more information, contact professors Bruce Martin at bruce.j.martin@LoneStar.edu, or Erika Herrera at Erika.Y.Herrera@LoneStar.edu.
