It's nice to be acknowledged for doing a good job but it's doubly nice to receive an award for a job well done. Three Lone Star College-Kingwood staff members were recently recognized by their peers for outstanding achievement.
Twyla Coy, Earnest Harris, and Janis Terry were the winners of the Lone Star College-Kingwood Staff Excellence Awards for 2009.
Nominees for the college's Staff Excellence Award are chosen by their colleagues from a ballot of all full time employees who have been with the college at least one year. Awards are given out annually at the college's January In-Service.
"I feel honored to be recognized for doing my job; it makes it easy to do a good job when you truly love what you do. The staff that I work with are such a blessing, and the team atmosphere is something I look forward each and every day," says Coy.
Coy has been with the college for four years and is currently serving as the Interim Program Manager for the Teacher Certification Program (TCP). Quoting a motto they use in the TCP, No one will care how much you know, until they know how much you care, she says, "When you are able to help someone fulfill their dreams, all of your hard work seems worth it."
Harris has been with the college for 23 years and serves as the Daily Operation Supervisor. He loves working with his hands and says he enjoys the daily challenge of ensuring that the heating and cooling systems are working properly.
"I feel great that my co-workers thought enough of me to do this for me," says Harris.
As Manager of the Learning Center for the past seven years, Terry stays busy helping students succeed. Her job involves training Learning Center tutors, overseeing the work of the coordinators of testing, as well as the open computer lab and supplemental instruction at the Learning Center.
Terry says she truly enjoys seeing the students succeed, but also enjoys the variety of activities she's a part of and the opportunity to interact with both the faculty and staff.
She says her department, comprised of 57 part-time staff and four full-time, truly works as a team. "It is easy to do a good job when you have people in your department who are dedicated to their jobs and enjoy what they are doing," says Terry.
