Archguitarist is Guest Speaker/Performer for Jan. 27 Lyceum Series

The Lone Star College-Montgomery Lyceum Speaker Series is pleased to welcome archguitarist Peter Blanchette from Massachusetts, who will give a lecture and brief instrumental recital on Tuesday, January 27, at 12 p.m. in building B, room 102.  A “meet and greet” reception with refreshments will be held at 11:30 am in the lobby outside of the lecture hall in building B.

Blanchette has performed in 15 countries in Europe, as well as throughout the United States. He holds a master’s degree from Smith College in music composition. In 1995 he was awarded the Massachusetts Cultural Council Artist of the Year Award for grant competition.

Blanchette is well known for his performances and his talent playing the archguitar.
“The archguitar is a modern instrument designed by myself and Walter Stanul in 1980,” said Blanchette. “Archguitars can have from nine to 11 strings, giving them a much larger musical range than six-string guitars.”

Most of Blanchette's recordings are of Baroque, Renaissance and modern classical music, though the instrument lends itself well to all acoustic styles. His current guitar enables him to arrange and perform a wide range of music that cannot be done with traditional ones.

Linda Woodward, chair of the Lyceum Series and professor of art at LSC-Montgomery, said that “this event has an appeal not only to music students but also to the community. His music is lively, complex and yet has a soothing quality.”

The Lyceum Speaker Series at LSC-Montgomery provides a variety of lectures throughout the fall and spring semesters that are based on sociological, historical, economic, political, psychological, and spiritual views. All campus and community members are invited to attend this free lecture and performance--as well as all other Lyceum events throughout the year.
