North Harris College needs instructors for seniors' program

North Harris College is looking for volunteers to teach active, mature adults beginning skills in arts, crafts, photography, dance, genealogy, gardening, do-it-yourself projects, health and wellness.

The Academy for Lifelong Learning (ALL) is part of a new community outreach effort to provide opportunities for continuing intellectual and cultural growth. Carole Wiater, the new coordinator for the program said, “The classes are meant to be fun and informative. These are the things that you’ve always wanted to know about, but maybe were afraid to try, or didn’t have the time to try.”

“We have great educational resources with our own professors and instructors here on campus, but we also want input from the community,” said Wiater.

The North Harris Montgomery Community College District has ALL programs at its other campuses—Cy-Fair, Kingwood, Montgomery and Tomball Colleges. “ALL is very successful at the other campuses and we want to have those activities available here in the Spring and Aldine communities,” said Wiater.

The schedule of classes ALL wants to offer is a short series of approximately one to four classes for one to two hours per class. They should be designed for adult learning. The classes have no exams, very few prerequisites and are given in a relaxed environment.

ALL is a membership program that costs $15 per year. This fee makes participants eligible to register for any class for one year. Some courses, such as craft classes, may require an additional material fee. “We try to keep the fees low, that’s why we need volunteers,” Wiater said.
