Check out Women's Month (March)

Join Lone Star College-CyFair throughout March for activities that celebrate, teach and empower women such as for a women’s health fair, international women’s discussions, vocal performances, films, library displays and more.

Windows on the World, whose mission is to facilitate a series of events designed to enrich the LSC-CyFair Community, will sponsor the 2009 Women’s Month with this year’s theme of “Breaking Boundaries: Contributions of Women - Past, Present and Future.”

The three weeks of activities on the Barker Cypress campus kick off with opening ceremonies March 2 at 6 pm. in the Center for the Arts and concludes March 31 at 11 a.m. in the College Center.

Among the ongoing activities held throughout the month are the Bosque Gallery’s “Encaustic Painting Exhibition” and the library’s “Women’s Work” display. In addition, Phi Theta Kappa students are selling orange bracelets inscribed with the word “Woman” in the top six languages spoken at LSC-CyFair to raise funds for the Susan and Jeff Edwards Scholarship for Single Mothers.

Other activities include films, discussions and vocalists. The four films highlighting stories about and/or written by women are “Down With Love”, “La France Divisée / France Divided”, “Whale Rider” and “Iron-Jawed Angels.” Discussion topics are “Women in Afghanistan”, “Asian and Latin American Women’s Quest for International Education”, “Women in Politics” and a women’s symposium that covers various issues. There will be a vocal performance featuring Fallon Franklin and a performance of French “chansons” with Deborah Boily.

The Women’s Health Fair is set for March16 – March 19 with daily guest speakers covering such topics as a new Breast MRI procedure, signs and symptoms of strokes as well as fitness and wellness success programs. A blood mobile will also be on campus March 20.
