Lone Star College-Kingwood’s Big Band will perform an exciting jazz concert on Nov. 11 at 7:30 p.m. at Strawbridge United Methodist Church.
The Harvey Relief Jazz Concert kicks off the Big Band’s 2017 season. It will combine the talented musicians from past years, many of whom are school music directors and local professionals. This performance is free and open to the community.
“In light of the hurricane flood damage, we hope this concert will be a musical diversion for our storm-impacted community as we recover and rebuild,” said Alfedo Velez, band director.
The Big Band will perform with renowned trombonist and Grammy-nominated arranger John Fedchock. He leads the John Fedchock Big Band in New York City and is a former member and musical director for the legendary Woody Herman Band. The composer has toured with several outstanding professional jazz bands, including T. Monk, the Gerry Mulligan Concert, the Louie Bellson Big Band, and the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band. Fedchock holds a master’s degree in Jazz Studies from Eastman School of Music in Rochester and his name appeared in Downbeat Magazine’s reader’s poll of outstanding trombone players for several years.
In addition to Fedchock’s five musical selections, the Kingwood Big Band will also perform melodies by the Gershwin brothers, Sammy Nestico, and newer tunes such as “pretty Little Nieda,” by Rolf Erickson and “Nature Boy,” written by Eden Ahbez.
“The Big Band is known for playing a number of melodic tunes with precise syncopations and deft musical execution,” Velez said. Join us for an evening of the hottest jazz music in north Houston.”
The jazz concert is free, but all donations will go toward the Lake Houston Harvey Relief Fund. The Strawbridge United Methodist Church is located at 5629 Kingwood Drive. For more information, call 832-779-1492 or email Alfredo.Velez@LoneStar.edu.
