LSC-Atascocita student earns foundation scholarship

LSC-Atascocita student earns foundation scholarshipEntering the business world after high school, Ruby Qattan was on top of the world. Although she obtained success, she realized something was missing.

“Even though I was climbing the corporate ladder, I was not satisfied. After a lot of soul searching, I realized that I wanted to go back to school and earn a college degree,” she said.

Qattan will graduate from Lone Star College-Atascocita Center in fall 2018 with an Associate of Arts Degree in Teaching. Afterwards, she plans to attend the University of Houston and earn a bachelor’s degree. Her goal is to return to Lone Star College as a professor.

“I have always had a heart for education, but it was the professors at LSC-Atascocita Center who helped me realize that my calling was to become a teacher,” Qattan said. I want to emulate their heart and passion for teaching.”

The future educator recently entered the Lone Star College Foundation Essay Contest and won a $1,000 scholarship. The money will help pay for her education and needed supplies.

“I have made many personal sacrifices to get my education, and this scholarship substantially lessens the effects of those expenses,” she said.

As a first generation American, whose parents immigrated from Lebanon, Qattan values the education she is earning at LSC-Atascocita Center.

“Attending an esteemed college where I will soon graduate, is a huge honor in my family. In my culture, it is strongly encouraged to seek higher education,” she said.

Qattan is a stepmother of two teenagers and an eight-year-old. In her spare time, she enjoys reading and doing outdoor activities with her family such as kayaking, biking, and hiking. She is also training to climb her first mountain.
