Lutricia Wheeler always wanted a career in the medical field, but it was not until a parent’s illness that she decided to be a nurse.
“My mom became terrifyingly sick in 2003 and almost lost her life. Every time I visited her, there was always a caring nurse by her side nursing her back to health. I knew then that I wanted to be a nurse,” Wheeler said.
At Lone Star College-Kingwood, the Humble resident is pursuing an associate degree in Nursing (ADN) and will graduate in December 2019. She plans to work as a registered nurse while earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing and a Master of Science Degree in Nursing. Wheeler’s ultimate goal is to become a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA).
“I want to nurse patients back to health the same way that other nurses did for my mother,” she said. “I want to acquire the medical knowledge to help treat them and make them feel completely safe and comfortable. I want to build relationships with them and be by their side every step of the way.”
The future nurse recently entered the Lone Star College Foundation Essay Contest and won a $1,000 scholarship. She will read her essay at the Chancellor’s Breakfast in February. The money will help her purchase books and supplies needed for the nursing program.
“Winning this scholarship is important to me because it gives me the confirmation that if I put my mind to something, whatever it is, I can achieve it,” Wheeler said. “I have had a grand experience at LSC-Kingwood. The class sizes are small, which makes it more conducive to learning and interacting one-on-one with my professors.”
In her spare time, Wheeler enjoys spending time with family and friends, movies, and music.
