LSC-Kingwood to Offer RAD Course

Lone Star College-KingwoodImagine walking alone through a shopping center parking lot and noticing a suspicious person lurking around the area. If that person attacks, are you prepared to defend yourself?

Lone Star College-Kingwood’s Women’s Center invites women age 16 and older to sign up for the Rape Aggression Defense Course (RAD) Jan. 21-23, 27, and 28 from 6-9 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center (PAC). RAD was designed to meet the needs of women to acquire self-defense education in a relatively short period of time with a life-long commitment required for physical skill mastery.

“This course will arm women with the necessary tools and skills needed to defend themselves against an unfortunate attack,” said Diane Blanco, women’s center director. “Participants do not have to be students and any woman in the community is welcome to attend.”

The Harris County Sheriff’s Department will teach the course at LSC-Kingwood. They will utilize special protective body suits during the final class to allow participants to fully demonstrate the self-defense techniques learned during the course. Participants should wear loose fitting, comfortable clothing, tennis shoes, and bring water and a snack.

The course is free, but a registration deposit of $25 is required in the form of check or cash to guarantee a place in the class. The fee is refundable when the student completes the course. The money can be paid in the Business Office located on the first floor of the Student-Conference Center. There is a minimum of 12 students necessary to hold a class and a maximum of 25.

RAD emphasizes realistic, self-defense tactics and techniques. It begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and avoidance, while focusing on the basics of hands-on defense training. It is the largest network of programs of its kind with more than 11,000 instructors who have trained more than 900,000 women since 1989. The program has a lifetime return and practice policy that is honored worldwide.

RAD is the only self-defense program ever endorsed by the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators (IACLEA), the National Academy of Defense Education (NADE), the National Self-Defense Institute (NSDI) and Redman Training Gear.
